The Lions have hosted a number of high end potential draft picks including Sammy Watkins and potential #1 pick Jadeveon Clowney. But one draft hopeful who was in town today makes more sense than both of them combined. While it's not as sexy or exciting, this young man has a very real chance of being a Lion on draft day if he's available in the right place.
The #Lions hosted former USC guard/center Marcus Martin for a pre-draft visit today. Martin is Mayock's No. 1 center available in the draft.— Tim Twentyman (@ttwentyman) April 21, 2014
According to NFL.com's draft profile, Martin is the kind of player who will do well given time to develop at the NFL level. This fits perfectly with what the Lions need at the center position. Dom Raiola, while solid this past season, only has a few more years left in the tank. Getting his future replacement on the roster now makes total sense. Dom can train him up, he gets comfortable with his future O-Line mates and he can develop better strength and footwork. Martin is, as mentioned, the top rated center in the draft however he's only projected as a 2nd to 3rd round pick. If Martin is there in the third or late in the 2nd, look for the Lions to make a move to lock up the USC big man.
Martin said joining the #Lions would be "a great opportunity to learn and develop as a player" under a veteran like Dominic Raiola.— Tim Twentyman (@ttwentyman) April 21, 2014
